Steel cable snares can be very effective in catching wild pigs. However, they pose a greater risk than other methods for capturing nontarget wildlife species (such as bear, deer, and turkey) as well as domestic animals (such as calves, sheep, goats, and dogs). For this reason it is illegal to use snares in some states. In those states where the use of snares is legal, natural resource agencies often discourage their use except when used by a trapping professional.
Captured pigs should be euthanized humanely, with little stress to the animal. Learn more about how to safely dispatch captured wild pigs.
